Movies shine light on dark Thai truths | Bangkok Post: opinion


Last week, I watched a South Korean film called A Taxi Driver. While thin-skinned autocrats may find the depiction of military violence in the film unacceptable, it's the opposite in South Korea. A Taxi Driver has been officially chosen as the country's representative to the Oscars. Patriotism is a South Korean virtue, and A Taxi Driver is a patriotic film. And while the South Korean president watched his country's Oscar submission and commented on its significance, the thought of our prime minister watching By the Time It Gets Dark and saying something, anything, about it is far-fetched.
